In Salento, the celebration wine of choice is Malvasia Nera. DieciAnni Malvasia Nera is a single varietal wine vinified without any contact with oak in order to enhance the natural fragrance of the fruit. DieciAnni Malvasia Nera is an intense ruby-red colour wine; on the nose are hints of dewberry, blood orange and violet. The palate is fresh with hints of cherry and blueberry. The wine is mouth-filling with supple tannins.
The origins of this wine date back to the Middle Ages: in this period, in fact, a particular type of wine was grown in Malta. Subsequently, in 1200 AD, the Venetians imported it to the peninsula thus starting its spread. The name "Malvasia" derives, however, from the Greek: The Venetians in fact coined this name after having conquered the city of the Peloponnese called "Monembasia". This malvasia is traditionally linked to the Salento area even if it is present in other areas of the country. This vine shows good resistance to high temperatures. The grapes have a thin skin and a sweet and crunchy pulp: this is why they are also used as fruit for fresh consumption. It is also blended with other varieties such as negroamaro and sangiovese. The first vintage bottled of Diecianni Malvasia Nera was 2016.
